MEET ALIÉNOR D'AQUITAINE AND RICHARD CŒUR DE LION

Founded in 1101 on the borders of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou, Fontevraud owes its power to the Plantagenets and their close ties with Eleanor of Aquitaine. Queen of France and then of England, she spent her last years here. Her recumbent tomb sits at the heart of the abbey church alongside those of Henry II Plantagenet and Richard the Lionheart.

LES POMMES TAPÉES DU VAL DE LOIRE

The story of Les Pommes Tapées is told in the midst of an astonishingly authentic setting: galleries dug entirely out of the cliff and nestling on the hillside. In the last century, this superb cellar was a major centre for the production of the famous pommes tapées. A veritable industry in the 19th century, this activity had completely disappeared. A special vision, a heritage. A vineyard established in the 19th century that quickly became the benchmark for quality in the Chinon region.

The origins of Château de La Grille date back to the 15th century.

The buildings delimiting the main courtyard on two sides are evidence of its primitive state.

To the east, a building rests on a pavilion to the south, covered by a four-sided roof over a corbelled top storey.

At sunset, an imposing quadrangular-shaped belfry. There are large stones in the walls, with three gun loopholes in a curious oval shape.
